Iron Man (2008)

Detailed Summary

Tony Stark’s Capture

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor, is captured by a terrorist group called the Ten Rings in Afghanistan. He is severely injured by one of his own company’s weapons and forced to build a devastating weapon for the terrorists.

The Creation of the Arc Reactor and Mark I

Instead of building the weapon, Stark constructs a miniaturized Arc Reactor to keep himself alive and to power a suit of armor to escape. With the help of fellow captive Yinsen (Shaun Toub), he builds the crude but powerful Mark I armor. Stark uses the suit to fight his way out of captivity, but Yinsen sacrifices himself to buy Stark time.

Returning Home and Building the Mark II and Mark III

Back home, Stark announces that his company, Stark Industries, will cease manufacturing weapons. This decision shocks his business partner, Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges). Stark then refines his suit, creating the sleek and powerful Mark II, followed by the red-and-gold Mark III. He tests the suits and perfects the technology with the help of his assistant, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and his friend, Lt. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Terrence Howard).

Discovering Stane’s Betrayal

Stark discovers that Stane has been trafficking weapons to terrorists behind his back and is responsible for Stark’s capture. Stane also creates a massive suit of armor based on Stark’s Mark I design, calling it the Iron Monger.

The Final Battle

Stark confronts Stane, leading to a climactic battle between Iron Man and Iron Monger. With the help of Pepper, who overloads the Arc Reactor powering Stark Industries, Stark is able to defeat Stane. Stane falls into the reactor and dies.

The Press Conference and Stark’s Revelation

In a press conference meant to cover up the events, Stark decides to reveal the truth and famously declares, “I am Iron Man.”
