ToggleDetailed Summary
The Wedding Interrupted
The film begins with the arrest of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) on their wedding day. Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) of the East India Trading Company has them arrested for aiding Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Beckett offers clemency if Will can obtain Jack’s compass, which points to what the holder desires most.
Jack’s Deal with Davy Jones
Captain Jack Sparrow is pursued by Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), the supernatural captain of the Flying Dutchman, to whom Jack owes a blood debt. Jones controls the Kraken, a sea monster, and demands Jack’s soul as payment. Jack seeks out the legendary Dead Man’s Chest, which contains Jones’s heart, in hopes of gaining control over Jones and avoiding his fate.
The Isla Cruces Battle
Will locates Jack and joins him in the search for the chest. Elizabeth, escaping imprisonment, also reunites with them. The trio, along with Norrington (Jack Davenport), who seeks to regain his honor after losing the HMS Dauntless, finds the chest on Isla Cruces. A three-way duel ensues over the heart, culminating in Norrington stealing the heart and fleeing to deliver it to Beckett.
The Kraken Attacks
Jones, aware of Jack’s betrayal, summons the Kraken. Aboard the Black Pearl, Jack initially attempts to flee but returns to aid his crew. Despite their efforts, the Kraken severely damages the ship. In a self-sacrificial move, Elizabeth chains Jack to the ship, believing it the only way to save the others. The Kraken drags Jack and the Pearl to the depths.
The Resurrection of Barbossa
The film concludes with the crew mourning Jack’s loss. However, Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), a voodoo priestess, offers hope by suggesting they can bring him back. She introduces their guide for the journey: the resurrected Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).
Movie Ending
The film ends on a cliffhanger with Captain Barbossa’s unexpected return, setting the stage for the sequel. The heart of Davy Jones is now in possession of Lord Beckett, giving him control over the seas and foreshadowing further conflict.
Are There Post-Credits Scenes?
Yes, there is a post-credits scene featuring the cannibalistic tribe from earlier in the film. It shows the tribe’s new chief: the dog previously seen with the prison keys, humorously implying its rise in status.
