Spider-Man (2002)

Detailed Summary

The Origin of Spider-Man

Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), a shy high school student, lives with his Aunt May (Rosemary Harris) and Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) in Queens, New York. He’s in love with his neighbor, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), but is too shy to confess his feelings. During a school trip to a genetics laboratory, Peter is bitten by a genetically engineered spider.

Discovering Powers

Peter begins to notice strange changes: enhanced strength, agility, the ability to cling to surfaces, and a sixth sense for danger. He also discovers he can shoot webs from his wrists. Initially, Peter uses his powers for personal gain, entering a wrestling match to earn money.

The Death of Uncle Ben

Peter’s irresponsibility leads to a tragic event: his Uncle Ben is killed by a carjacker Peter could have stopped earlier. This pivotal moment instills in Peter the lesson that “with great power comes great responsibility.”

Becoming Spider-Man

Peter designs a costume and becomes Spider-Man, fighting crime in New York City. His heroics earn him the ire of J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons), the editor of the Daily Bugle, who brands him a menace.

The Rise of Green Goblin

Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), the father of Peter’s best friend Harry (James Franco), is the head of Oscorp. After a failed experiment with a performance-enhancing chemical, Norman becomes the Green Goblin, a supervillain with enhanced strength and a maniacal alter ego.

The Battle for New York

Green Goblin and Spider-Man clash multiple times. The Goblin tries to persuade Spider-Man to join him, but Peter refuses. Their final confrontation takes place on the Queensboro Bridge, where the Goblin forces Spider-Man to choose between saving Mary Jane or a tram full of children. Spider-Man manages to save both.

The Final Showdown

The climactic battle occurs in an abandoned building. Green Goblin reveals his true identity to Peter, but when Norman tries to attack Peter with his glider, Spider-Man dodges, and the Goblin is impaled by his own weapon. Norman’s dying words ask Peter not to tell Harry about his alter ego.

The Aftermath

Peter brings Norman’s body back to the Osborn estate. Harry sees Spider-Man with his father’s body and vows revenge. At Norman’s funeral, Peter rejects Mary Jane’s romantic advances to protect her from his dangerous life as Spider-Man, embracing his role as a hero.

Movie Ending

The film ends with Peter Parker fully embracing his responsibilities as Spider-Man, swinging through the city skyline. He understands the sacrifices required to protect those he loves while upholding his duty to fight crime.
