Taken 3 (2014)

Bryan Mills just cannot catch a break. His daughter was taken. Then he and his wife were taken. In Taken 3, however, the formula gets a shake-up when the only thing taken is Bryan’s freedom, framing him for a murder he did not commit.

Detailed Summary

A Murder and a Frame-Up

Retired CIA operative Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) is living a quiet life in Los Angeles. He tries to reconnect with his ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen), who is unhappy in her marriage to the wealthy but shady Stuart St. John (Dougray Scott). After a tense meeting where Lenore hints at wanting to be with Bryan, he agrees to give her space.

The next day, Stuart asks Bryan to stay away from Lenore. Bryan later receives a text from Lenore asking to meet for bagels. He arrives at his apartment to find her dead on his bed with her throat slit.

Immediately, LAPD officers arrive to arrest him. Bryan, realizing he has been framed, swiftly incapacitates the officers and escapes. He begins a one-man mission to find Lenore’s true killer and clear his name.

On the Run

Leading the manhunt is Inspector Franck Dotzler (Forest Whitaker), a shrewd detective who quickly deduces Bryan’s professional background. Bryan uses his “particular set of skills” to orchestrate a meeting with his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), at her college. There, he removes a surveillance bug planted by Stuart and learns Kim is pregnant.

Bryan’s trail leads him to a gas station where Lenore’s car was last seen. He retrieves the car’s GPS data, which reveals Lenore visited a remote location before her death. This path eventually leads Bryan to a deadly car chase on a Los Angeles freeway, where he evades both police and the killers pursuing him.

Unraveling the Conspiracy

Bryan deduces that Stuart is involved in Lenore’s murder. Stuart had significant life insurance policies on Lenore, providing a clear motive. Bryan kidnaps and interrogates Stuart, who confesses to owing money to a former Spetsnaz operative named Oleg Malankov (Sam Spruell).

Stuart admits that Malankov killed Lenore as part of a business deal gone wrong. Furthermore, Stuart used Bryan as a scapegoat to collect the insurance money and pay off his debt. Malankov’s men, consequently, have been hunting Bryan to eliminate the only witness.

Movie Ending

The final act leads Bryan to Malankov’s heavily fortified penthouse. After a brutal firefight with Malankov’s crew, Bryan confronts the Russian gangster alone. Malankov reveals the full truth: Stuart orchestrated everything, offering Malankov a cut of the insurance money in exchange for murdering Lenore and framing Bryan.

Bryan kills Malankov in a violent struggle. Meanwhile, Stuart kidnaps Kim, planning to flee the country with her and the insurance money. Bryan races to the Santa Monica Airport in Stuart’s Porsche, with Inspector Dotzler and the LAPD in hot pursuit.

Bryan manages to crash his car into Stuart’s plane just before takeoff. He overpowers Stuart and is about to kill him, but he stops when Kim pleads with him. Instead of killing Stuart, Bryan tells him, “I’m going to let you live. But what I will do is find every dirty little secret you have…and one day, maybe five or ten years from now, you’re going to be in a prison cell.” Police arrest Stuart, and Bryan is cleared of all charges. In the final scene, Dotzler tells Bryan not to expect any leniency for his actions, to which Bryan replies, “Good luck.”

Are There Post-Credits Scenes?

No, Taken 3 has no post-credits scenes or mid-credits stingers. Once the credits begin to roll, the story is officially over.

Type of Movie

Taken 3 is an action thriller. Unlike its predecessors, which were straightforward rescue missions, this film shifts into a fugitive manhunt narrative. It adopts a tone similar to films like The Fugitive, focusing on Bryan’s efforts to evade capture while simultaneously hunting the real criminals.

  • Forest Whitaker – Inspector Franck Dotzler
  • Maggie Grace – Kim Mills
  • Famke Janssen – Lenore Mills-St. John
  • Dougray Scott – Stuart St. John

Film Music and Composer

The score for Taken 3 was composed by Nathaniel Méchaly. Having scored the previous two films in the series, Méchaly provides a consistent musical identity for the trilogy. His music is characterized by tense, percussive rhythms and driving electronic elements that amplify the film’s relentless pace and high-stakes action sequences.

Filming Locations

Taken 3 was primarily filmed in Los Angeles, California. The sprawling urban environment of L.A. serves as a crucial backdrop for the manhunt. Key sequences, including the dramatic freeway chase, utilize the city’s iconic infrastructure to create a sense of scale and danger.

Additional scenes were shot in Covington, Georgia, a town often used by Hollywood productions to double for other locations. These settings provide the necessary contrast between suburban life and the criminal underworld Bryan navigates.

Awards and Nominations

While critically panned, Taken 3 resonated with audiences enough to win the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Thriller Movie in 2016. Its nominations were primarily for popular choice awards rather than critical accolades.

Behind the Scenes Insights

  • Liam Neeson was initially hesitant to return for a third film, reportedly stating, “I can’t see a possible scenario where audiences wouldn’t go, ‘Oh, come on… she’s taken again?'” The plot change to a fugitive story ultimately convinced him.
  • The film’s marketing heavily leaned on the “no one gets taken” angle, using the tagline “It Ends Here” to signal this was the final chapter of Bryan Mills’ story.
  • Director Olivier Megaton is known for his signature “frenetic” editing style, which involves extremely fast cuts during action sequences. This style is prominently on display throughout the film.
  • Forest Whitaker spent time with actual police detectives to prepare for his role as Inspector Dotzler. He also developed small character quirks, like his habit of playing with a rubber band, to make his character more distinct.

Inspirations and References

The film’s plot borrows heavily from the classic 1993 thriller The Fugitive. Bryan Mills serves as the Dr. Richard Kimble figure, a man wrongly accused of his wife’s murder who must evade a nationwide manhunt to find the real killer. Inspector Dotzler fills the role of U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard, the intelligent and relentless lawman tasked with his capture.

Alternate Endings and Deleted Scenes

An unrated, extended cut of Taken 3 was released for home video. This version includes a few extra minutes of footage, primarily extending scenes of violence to be more graphic. However, there are no significant alternate endings or deleted scenes that alter the plot’s outcome or character motivations.

Book Adaptations and Differences

The Taken film series is not based on any books. It is an original story conceived by French filmmaker Luc Besson and his frequent collaborator, screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen. They wrote all three films in the trilogy.
